Heading Structure Analyzer
Audit any page's H1/H2/H3 hierarchy for SEO and accessibility issues.
Proper heading structure is a quiet but important ranking signal - Google uses headings to understand a page's topic depth, and AI search engines use them to extract sections for citations. It's also non-negotiable for accessibility (screen readers navigate by heading levels). This tool fetches any URL and audits its full heading hierarchy: how many H1s, whether H2/H3/H4 follow in proper order, whether levels are skipped, and whether headings are descriptive. Common issues it catches: missing H1 (every page needs exactly one), multiple H1s (HTML5 allows it but Google still prefers one), skipped levels (H1 to H3 with no H2), and stuffed/empty headings. Free, no signup - the page just gets fetched server-side and parsed. Works on any public URL.
Frequently asked questions
Should I really only use one H1?
Yes. HTML5 technically allows multiple H1s in section blocks, but Google's documentation still recommends one H1 per page for clarity. Multiple H1s won't get you penalized but they signal a structural problem.
Is it bad to skip heading levels?
Yes. Going from H1 directly to H3 (skipping H2) is a structural issue both for SEO and accessibility. The fix is either to add an H2 above the H3 or demote the H3 to H2.
How long should an H1 be?
Under 70 characters is the sweet spot. Long H1s usually mean the heading is doing too much - split it into a shorter H1 plus a subheadline (regular paragraph, not H2).
Does this check accessibility specifically?
It catches the heading-related accessibility issues (missing H1, skipped levels, empty headings). For a full accessibility audit, run the Lighthouse Score Checker - it includes the WCAG checks.
