Google is now one of the most-cited domains inside its own AI Mode, and those citations increasingly point at Google-hosted pages instead of your website. Profound tracked an 8.4x jump in google.com's citation share between April 15 and June 30, 2026, driven almost entirely by Business Profile cards and Product Knowledge Panels. For local and ecommerce brands, the response is to own the Google surface that now sits between you and the click.
This is not a ranking Google won against your pages. It is a layout change. AI Mode used to answer a "best plumber near me" or "compare these two cameras" query by citing independent sites. Now it often renders a Google-hosted card and cites that. The card carries a google.com URL, so it registers as a citation to Google. The practical result is that a large share of local and product answers resolve without a click to anyone's independent site.
What "Google cites itself in AI Mode" actually means
Two specific Google surfaces are doing almost all of the work. Profound's analysis identified the growth as coming from two google.com subpaths: google.com/searchviewer/, which renders the Business Profile card, and google.com/search?, which renders the Product Knowledge Panel. When AI Mode answers a local-intent question, it frequently drops in the Business Profile card with hours, photos, location, and reviews. When it answers a product question about price, compatibility, or specifications, it frequently drops in the Product Knowledge Panel.
Both cards are citations, and both are Google's. Profound measured the local-side impact across more than 32 million google.com/searchviewer/ instances. This is answer engine optimization turned against the open web: the answer engine is citing itself.
How big is the self-citation shift?
Three independent studies reached the same conclusion through different methods. They disagree on the exact rank, which is the honest and useful part, because it tells you the effect is real rather than an artifact of one vendor's tracking.
| Study | Sample | google.com finding |
|---|---|---|
| Profound (Apr 15–Jun 30, 2026) | 32M+ searchviewer instances | No. 2 cited domain; citation share up 8.4x |
| SE Ranking (Feb 2026) | 1,321,398 citations, 68,313 keywords | 17.42% of all AI Mode citations; top-cited in 19 of 20 niches |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar (Jul 2026) | 1,155,886 distinct google.com pages | No. 3 domain at 11.5% mention share (Reddit 19.9%, YouTube 17.0%) |
SE Ranking's number is the one to sit with. It found google.com in 17.42% of all AI Mode citations as of February 2026, roughly triple the 5.7% share it measured in June 2025. Of Google's own citations, 59% pointed to the organic-results panel and 36.1% to Business Profiles. Add YouTube, another Google property, and Google-owned sources make up close to a fifth of everything AI Mode cites.
Ahrefs ranks google.com third rather than second, behind Reddit and YouTube. The gap comes from method: Profound counts card impressions in local and product answers, Ahrefs' Brand Radar samples broad US queries across all topics, and SE Ranking weights by niche. Different lenses, same picture. Google's properties have gone from a rounding error to a top-three citation source in the space of a year. For the broader pattern of where AI answers pull from, see how ChatGPT picks its sources, which runs on a completely different and equally undocumented set of pipelines.
Why local and product queries got hit first
Both query types have a canonical Google-owned answer already sitting in the index. For a local business, that is the Business Profile. For a product, that is the Shopping Graph entry. AI Mode did not have to build anything new. It reused structured data Google already held and rendered it inline.
Profound's data shows the local effect concentrated in five verticals: hospitality and travel, home services, restaurants and dining, real estate, and healthcare. SE Ranking's niche breakdown lines up, with travel at 53.18% of citations and real estate at 30.54%. These are categories where the searcher wants a fact (hours, location, price, availability) more than an article, and a card delivers that fact faster than a page does. If your business lives in one of those five, this is already changing how often anyone reaches your site.
What local brands do now
The Business Profile stopped being a directory listing and became the surface AI Mode cites in your place. Treat it as a landing page.
- Claim and fully complete the profile. Every field AI Mode can render is a field worth filling: correct name, address, phone, hours, primary and secondary categories, services, attributes, and a full set of current photos. An incomplete profile is a weaker card, and a weaker card is a worse first impression that you no longer get to control on your own site.
- Keep the data identical everywhere. Your Business Profile, your website's LocalBusiness schema, and your listings across major directories should agree on name, address, and phone to the character. Consistency is how Google verifies the entity it is about to cite.
- Earn and answer reviews. Reviews render inside the card. They are now part of the answer, not a separate tab a user visits later.
- Use your site for what a card cannot hold. A card shows hours and a rating. It cannot show a detailed service explainer, a pricing breakdown, or a comparison. Publish those, because they are the queries where AI Mode still needs an independent source and where a click still happens.
None of this is new local SEO. What changed is the stakes: the profile is now the citation, so a half-built profile is a half-built answer.
What ecommerce brands do now
For products, the equivalent surface is the Product Knowledge Panel, and the equivalent control point is Google Merchant Center. Product panels in AI Mode draw from Google's Shopping Graph, a dataset Google describes as more than 50 billion product listings with roughly 2 billion updated every hour. You populate it through Merchant Center feeds and product structured data.
- Run an active Merchant Center feed with free listings enabled. Without a feed in the Shopping Graph, a product cannot appear in AI Mode's product panels. This is the entry ticket, not an optimization.
- Align feed, schema, and page. Price, availability, GTIN, brand, and specifications should match across your Merchant Center feed, your on-page Product schema, and the visible page. Mismatches trigger disapprovals and pull the product out of the surfaces you are trying to win.
- Fill the new conversational attributes. Google has been adding Merchant Center data attributes aimed at AI surfaces, including answers to common product questions and compatible or substitute products. These map directly to the comparison and compatibility queries where the Product Knowledge Panel now appears.
- Watch the new AI performance insights. Google is rolling out reporting in Merchant Center that shows how products perform on AI Mode, AI Overviews, and the Gemini app, including share of voice against similar brands. As of mid-2026 this is rolling out in the US and a handful of other markets. Use it to see which products the panel is actually surfacing.
Local vs ecommerce: where the citation goes
The mechanic is the same for both, but the surface and the control point differ. Here is the side-by-side.
| Local brands | Ecommerce brands | |
|---|---|---|
| Google surface cited | Business Profile card (google.com/searchviewer/) | Product Knowledge Panel (google.com/search?) |
| What you control | Google Business Profile | Merchant Center feed + product schema |
| Entry requirement | Claimed, verified profile | Active feed with free listings |
| Data that must match | NAP, hours, categories across web | Price, availability, GTIN across feed and page |
| Renders in the answer | Hours, photos, reviews, location | Price, image, specs, buying options |
| Where your site still wins | Service depth, guides, comparisons | Reviews depth, buying guides, comparisons |
What this does not change
The self-citation surge is loud, and it is easy to read it as "SEO is over." It is not. Two things still hold.
First, the organic-results panel is 59% of Google's own AI Mode citations per SE Ranking, and that panel is populated by pages that rank. When AI Mode cites google.com's organic panel, it is pointing at the same ranked results you optimize for. Strong rankings still feed the machine. The foundations covered in our Google GEO guidance breakdown have not moved.
Second, informational and comparison queries without a canonical Google card still cite independent sites heavily. The categories getting displaced are the fact-lookup ones. The categories where a searcher wants analysis, a real comparison, or a point of view remain open, and those are exactly the pages worth building. This is the same split that separates SEO from AEO and GEO: rank a link, win the answer, earn the citation.
The uncomfortable part is measurement. If AI Mode answers a local or product query with a Google card, you may never see the impression in your own analytics, because there was no click. Track your Business Profile insights and Merchant Center's new AI reporting directly, not just your site traffic, or you will misread a citation you won as a visit you lost. For the wider question of which engines still send real clicks, see our breakdown of AI referral traffic.
The one-line version
Google inserted itself as the citation for local and product answers in AI Mode. You cannot outrank the card, so own it: for local, that means a complete, accurate, well-reviewed Business Profile; for ecommerce, an accurate Merchant Center feed with product data that matches your page. Then keep publishing the depth a card cannot hold, because those are the queries where an independent citation, and a click, are still on the table.
