For AI visibility, brand mentions beat backlinks by roughly 3 to 1. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for links. Mentions of your name across the web, linked or not, now predict AI citations better than who links to you. Links still matter, just less.
Brand mentions vs backlinks: the correlation data
Ahrefs' Q1 2026 AI Search Benchmark measured which signals track with a brand showing up in Google's AI Overviews, across 75,000 brands (domains with Domain Rating above 40, keywords with 800+ monthly searches, Spearman correlation). The gap between mention signals and link signals is the headline.
| Signal | Type | Correlation with AI visibility |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube mentions | Mention | 0.737 |
| Branded web mentions | Mention | 0.664 |
| Branded anchor text | Link + brand | 0.527 |
| Backlinks (link volume) | Link | 0.218 |
YouTube mentions were the single strongest signal in the study. Branded anchor text sits in the middle because it carries a brand name inside a link, part mention, part link. Raw link volume lands at the bottom. That order is the whole argument: the more a signal is about your name and the less it is about a hyperlink, the better it tracks AI visibility.
Why do mentions beat links for AI answers?
A backlink is an instruction to a crawler about where to go. A brand mention is a statement about what to trust. Generative engines assemble answers from what the web collectively says about an entity, so a plain-text reference in a trusted source feeds the model directly, no link required. This is why practitioners now call AI visibility an off-page problem: the work happens on other people's pages, not yours.
Links keep doing their old job underneath. They help pages get discovered, indexed, and ranked, and search rank feeds the retrieval step that AI engines use to pick sources. Losing that foundation would cost you visibility. But adding your 500th backlink moves the AI needle far less than getting named in a video, a Reddit thread, or a trade roundup.
The correlation-not-causation catch
One caveat carries the whole piece: these are correlations, not proven levers. Large, established brands earn more mentions and more AI citations at the same time, so brand size can be driving both. The 0.664 figure is consistent across independent reporting of the study, but it does not prove that manufacturing mentions raises your visibility. Treat mention volume as a strong indicator of a brand AI already trusts, not a switch you flip. Spammy, low-quality mentions are unlikely to help and may hurt.
An independent meta-analysis agrees
Cyrus Shepard's Zyppy Signal analysis (May 2026) scored 54 studies, experiments, patents, and case studies into 23 evidence-ranked AI citation factors, weighting advice by strength of evidence instead of opinion. The top factors are URL accessibility (9.5) and search rank (9.4). Relevant here: brand/entity trust ranks 16th at 6.8, while domain authority, a link-based metric, ranks 22nd at 5.0. Two very different methods, the Ahrefs correlation study and Shepard's meta-analysis, land in the same place. Brand signals outweigh link authority for getting cited.
Should you stop building links?
No. Read the data as a rebalance, not a replacement, the same way GEO extends SEO rather than replacing it. Links remain table stakes: they get you crawled and ranked, and rank feeds AI retrieval. What changes is where the marginal effort goes. If you were spending most of an off-page budget on link acquisition, the evidence says shift a large share of it toward earning mentions on the surfaces engines cite.
How to earn brand mentions AI actually reads
The pattern across the research is consistent. Mentions on third-party, editorially-judged surfaces move the needle; owned content and raw link building do not.
- Get on YouTube. The single strongest signal in the Ahrefs data. Aim to be named in videos in your category, in the video itself and the description.
- Show up in communities. Reddit and niche forums are cited heavily by AI engines. Earn genuine mentions, do not spam threads with your brand.
- Chase editorial and trade coverage. A market overview in a trade publication or a comparison in a respected outlet is worth more than a directory link.
- Do podcasts. Guest appearances put your brand name in transcripts on pages engines retrieve.
- Keep naming consistent. Use one brand name and description everywhere so the model resolves every mention to the same entity.
- Sustain mention velocity. Steady new coverage from independent sources beats a stale spike from a year ago.
Track the result the same way you would any AI signal: measure whether engines name you, using the AI SEO tools built for citation and mention tracking, and fold it into your broader LLM optimization program. The scoreboard for AI search is your name, not your link count.
