To get cited by ChatGPT, make your page trivially fetchable by OAI-SearchBot, rank for the query in live web search, and put a direct answer to the exact question in the first third of the page. Those three things do most of the work. Everything sold as a shortcut, schema hacks, "submit your site" services, AI-rewritten copy, does not.
This is a ChatGPT-specific playbook. The mechanics of how the model chooses among fetched pages are covered in how ChatGPT picks its sources; the broad multi-engine version lives in the LLM SEO guide. Here the goal is narrower: the concrete steps, in order, that decide whether your URL shows up as a citation.
Getting cited is a two-stage game
A citation is not one event. ChatGPT first fetches candidate pages through its retrieval pipelines, then cites a fraction of them in the answer. The two stages have different failure modes, and most sites lose at the first one without knowing it.
Fetched-but-not-cited is common. In one logged sample of ChatGPT's traffic, Reddit was pulled 278 times and cited 11 times, and YouTube was fetched 201 times and cited zero. The model grabs a lot of material to read, then quotes a small, clean subset. So the job splits cleanly: be reachable, then be the most quotable answer once reached. The steps below map to those two stages.
Step 1: Let OAI-SearchBot actually reach your page
If ChatGPT's search crawler cannot fetch your page, nothing else matters. OpenAI documents its bots separately, and this trips up more sites than any content problem.
| Crawler | What it does | Blocking it means |
|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces your site in ChatGPT search answers | You vanish from ChatGPT search citations |
GPTBot | Crawls content for model training | Your pages stay out of future training data |
ChatGPT-User | Fetches a page when a user's prompt triggers a live visit | ChatGPT cannot open your page on demand |
OpenAI's own crawler docs are blunt about the first one: OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features. Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." OpenAI recommends explicitly allowing it in robots.txt and allowing its published IP ranges.
The trap: allowing GPTBot does nothing for search visibility, and many sites block AI bots wholesale at the CDN. Cloudflare began blocking AI crawlers by default for new domains, so you can be invisible to ChatGPT without ever touching your robots.txt. Check both. Then confirm the actual content is fetchable: facts, prices, and specs in plain HTML, not rendered by JavaScript, hidden in a PDF, or baked into an image. A scraper reads the raw HTML and gives up when the numbers are not there. Cyrus Shepard's evidence-weighted ranking factors, a scoring of 54 studies, patents, and experiments published in May 2026, put URL accessibility at the very top (9.5 out of 10), above search rank itself.
Step 2: Rank for the query and its fan-out
ChatGPT runs live web searches and cites what those searches return, so your standing in ordinary search still decides most of this. The reassuring part: you do not need the top three. Semrush's AI search study found ChatGPT cites pages ranking in traditional organic positions 21 and beyond almost 90% of the time. It reaches deeper into the results than a human ever would, which is exactly the opening for a site that has not cracked page one.
The harder part is that ChatGPT does not run one search per question. It fans a single prompt out into many sub-queries, then assembles an answer from across them. In the logged sample above, a reasoning-model prompt fired roughly 15 to 40 searches, including targeted probes like site:yourdomain.com/pricing. Google's AI Mode shows the same pattern: Ahrefs measured 5 to 11 sub-queries per prompt, and Seer Interactive clocked about 10.7. Shepard's data ranks "fan-out rank" (9.3) nearly as high as plain search rank.
The practical move is to cover a topic as a cluster, not a single trophy page. One page answering the seed query, supporting pages answering the predictable follow-ups (pricing, comparisons, "is X worth it," "X vs Y"), and clean, factual pages on your own domain so the site: probes find a real answer. A tidy /pricing page in plain HTML can win the sub-query about your own product before a competitor's roundup does.
Step 3: Answer the exact question in the first third of the page
Once fetched, you are competing to be the quotable bit. Two of Shepard's top factors are query-answer match (9.2) and answer-near-the-top (8.8), and citation-position studies keep landing in the same place: a large share of what gets quoted comes from the opening of a page, not the conclusion.
Write for extraction:
- Lead with the answer. Open the page, and each section, with a direct 40-to-70-word response to the question, phrased the way a person would ask it. Bold the key term. A reader or a model that stops after the first paragraph should still leave with the answer.
- Match the question's wording. If people ask "how much does X cost," the sentence that answers it should contain "cost" and a number, not a paragraph of context first.
- Be specific and quotable. "X converts at 4.4 times the rate of Y" is citable. "X can offer significant improvements" is not. Concrete claims with numbers get pulled; hedged prose gets skipped.
- One strong page per claim. A single authoritative URL beats three thin pages fighting over the same fetch.
- Do not suppress your own snippets. Preview control ranks fourth in Shepard's data (9.2). A
nosnippettag, an aggressivemax-snippetlimit, or adata-nosnippetwrapper around the paragraph that actually answers the question tells search systems not to show that text, and a passage that cannot be previewed is a passage that cannot be quoted. Audit your head tags and check that the answer itself is not fenced off.
This is the same discipline behind ranking in AI Overviews and answer engine optimization generally. The engines differ; the habit of front-loading a clean answer transfers.
Step 4: Earn mentions off your own site
The strongest off-page signal for AI visibility is not backlinks, it is being talked about. Ahrefs' study of roughly 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664, versus 0.218 for backlinks, with YouTube mentions the single strongest signal at 0.737. ChatGPT's retrieval leans on established publishers and reference sites for the citations it promotes to the front of an answer, so third-party coverage feeds the pipe that credits sources, not just the one that fetches them.
That means the work is partly PR, partly presence. Get covered in trade press and reputable roundups. Show up where the model already looks. And do not stake it all on one channel: when OpenAI changed its retrieval in August 2026, Reddit's ChatGPT citations collapsed by roughly 86% almost overnight. A single-platform strategy is one algorithm tweak from zero.
What does not move the needle
Spend your time on the four steps above, not these:
- Schema markup as a citation lever. Adding JSON-LD does not lift citations. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema and saw citations barely move. Cited pages carry schema more often, but that is a symptom of a well-run site, not the cause. The full breakdown is in does schema markup help AI citations. Keep schema for rich results; do not expect it to earn a citation.
- "Submit your site to ChatGPT" services. There is no submission API. Anyone selling direct ChatGPT inclusion is selling fiction.
- AI-rewritten content. An article spun by an AI is not more citable to an AI. Substance is what gets quoted.
- Set-and-forget pages. Citations decay. A study of 2.4 million citation records found 57.2% of cited domains appeared in a single month and never again. Comparison, FAQ, and how-to pages persisted better than long-form guides. Put your cited pages on a refresh cycle.
How to check whether ChatGPT cites you
There is no official citation dashboard, and you should be skeptical of any tool that claims a single "ChatGPT visibility score." The retrieval pipeline serving your query changes between runs, accounts, and countries, so one audit from one account is one cohort's experience, not the truth.
Two honest tracks. First, ask ChatGPT in search mode the real questions your buyers ask, record which domains it links, and run each prompt several times, because the primary source shifts on repeat runs. Second, watch your analytics: ChatGPT referral traffic shows up from chatgpt.com, and while it is a small slice today, it converts far above traditional organic (Semrush measured AI-search visitors at 4.4 times the value by conversion rate). Growing that slice is covered in the AI referral traffic breakdown.
Getting cited by ChatGPT is not a trick you apply once. It is fetchability, ranking, a clean answer up top, and earned mentions, maintained on a page you keep current. Do those, audit from more than one account before you call a change a win, and let the schema-and-shortcut crowd chase the levers that do not pull.
